How Much Does a Trip to Varanasi Cost in 2026? Real Numbers from a Local
The question I get most from people planning a trip isn't about temples or the Aarti. It's this: "How much money should I bring?"
The honest answer is that Varanasi can be one of the cheapest places you ever travel — or surprisingly expensive, if you don't know the real prices and someone decides to charge you "foreigner rates" for everything.
I was born in the galis (lanes) of Kashi and still live near Brahma Ghat. These are the numbers I'd give a friend. All prices are in Indian rupees with approximate US dollar equivalents at roughly ₹88 to $1. Prices vary by season and by how well you negotiate, so treat these as realistic ranges, not fixed rates.
Quick Answer: Daily Budget per Person
- Budget traveller: about ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per day (approx $17 to $28)
- Mid-range traveller: about ₹4,500 to ₹9,000 per day (approx $50 to $100)
- Luxury traveller: about ₹15,000 to ₹40,000+ per day (approx $170 to $450+)
These include accommodation, food, local transport, a boat ride and small extras, but not flights or trains to reach Varanasi. Now let's break it down.
Accommodation
This is where your budget is really decided.
- Hostel dorm bed: ₹400 to ₹800 a night (approx $5 to $9). Some Zostel-type hostels offer AC dorms from around ₹500 including breakfast.
- Budget guesthouse (private room): ₹800 to ₹1,800 (approx $9 to $20). Many are in the old city near the ghats. Basic, but often with great rooftops.
- Mid-range hotel: ₹2,500 to ₹6,000 (approx $28 to $68). Better comfort, reliable hot water, sometimes a river view.
- Luxury river-view hotel: ₹10,000 to ₹35,000+ (approx $115 to $400+). Heritage havelis and palace hotels on the ghats.
Tip: Staying near the ghats saves you money and time on transport, because you'll walk almost everywhere. Staying in the Cantonment area is quieter and more modern, but every trip to the river means an auto or cab.
Food
Varanasi is a food city, and eating local is incredibly cheap.
- Chai: ₹10 to ₹20 a cup (approx 10 to 25 cents)
- Kachori sabzi breakfast with jalebi: ₹40 to ₹80 (under $1)
- Chaat (tamatar chaat, palak chaat): ₹40 to ₹100 a plate
- Lassi: ₹50 to ₹150 depending on toppings and the shop's fame
- Banarasi paan: ₹20 to ₹100
- Simple thali at a local restaurant: ₹120 to ₹250 (approx $1.50 to $3)
- Rooftop café meal for tourists: ₹300 to ₹700 (approx $3.50 to $8)
- Hotel restaurant dinner: ₹800 to ₹2,500+ per person
A budget traveller eating local can eat very well on ₹400 to ₹700 a day. Mid-range, mixing cafés and good restaurants, expect ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. Bottled water is ₹20 for a litre — always check the MRP printed on the bottle.
Local Transport
- Airport to the ghats: the airport at Babatpur is about 26 km away, 45 to 75 minutes. Prepaid taxi roughly ₹600 to ₹1,000 (approx $7 to $11). Uber and Ola work too.
- Auto-rickshaw within the city: ₹50 to ₹200 for most trips. Agree the price before you get in.
- E-rickshaw (shared): ₹10 to ₹30 per person on fixed routes.
- Uber or Ola: usually ₹100 to ₹300 for city trips. The easiest way to avoid negotiation.
- Cycle-rickshaw: ₹50 to ₹150 for short trips in the old city.
Remember: vehicles stop at Godowlia, and you walk the last 5 to 10 minutes to Dashashwamedh Ghat. Inside the old city, your feet are your transport.
Boats
The boat ride is the one thing you shouldn't skip.
- Private rowboat for 2 to 4 people: about ₹800 to ₹1,500 per hour for the whole boat (approx $9 to $17)
- Shared boat: ₹100 to ₹200 per person
- Motorboat: more expensive, roughly double a rowboat, and noisier
Always agree the total price and exact duration before you step on. Never accept a "per person" price for a private boat unless you're sure. My boat ride price guide has the full details and the tricks boatmen use.
Temples and Sights
- Ganga Aarti: free from the ghat steps. Watching from a boat costs a seat fee, usually a few hundred rupees per person on normal days.
- Kashi Vishwanath general darshan: free. Sugam (fast-track) darshan is around ₹250 to ₹300, booked only on the official website or counter. Lockers are free or very cheap. More in my Kashi Vishwanath guide.
- Ghats: free. Nobody can charge you to walk on the ghats.
- Sarnath: around ₹300 for the main site and roughly ₹100 for the museum for foreigners, plus ₹500 to ₹900 return transport. See my Sarnath day trip guide.
- Ramnagar Fort: a small entry fee; check at the gate.
Extras

Festival-Season Premium
Prices jump around big festivals, especially Dev Deepawali (24 November 2026), Diwali, Holi and Mahashivratri. Around Dev Deepawali, river-view hotels can charge two to four times normal and book out months ahead. Evening boats run several times their usual price, and commercial "celebration boats" have been advertised at around ₹4,000 per person. If you're coming then, budget generously and book early. My Dev Deepawali 2026 guide explains how.
October to March is peak season overall, so rooms cost more than in the hot months. Summer (April to June) and monsoon (July to September) bring the lowest prices — with heat and rain as the trade-off.
Money Tips
- Carry cash. Small shops, boatmen and autos often prefer cash. Keep ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100 notes — nobody has change for ₹500 at 5 AM on the ghats.
- Use bank ATMs inside branches or malls, and cover your PIN.
- Check MRP on all packaged goods.
- Agree every price first — boats, autos, guides, everything.
- Use apps like Uber and Ola for transport to skip negotiation.
- Don't let drivers take you shopping. Commission adds 20 to 40 percent to everything. My Varanasi scams guide covers this.
The Bottom Line
Varanasi rewards travellers who know the numbers. The difference between a ₹600 boat ride and a ₹3,000 boat ride is not the boat — it's whether you knew the fair price before you walked down the steps.
